A strong performance secures a win

Treharris blew away the New Year blues with this excellent win against second in the table Cilfynydd.

It was a strong Treharris side that made the short trip to Cilfynydd, a team made up of some old campaigners, some products of our youth system and not so old heads.

Lloyd Bennett opened the scoring for the visitors with a penalty in the first 10 minutes. 0-3

It took Cilfynydd 25 minutes to get on the score sheet with two fine tries, with the highlight being a chip over the top of the Treharris defence to score between the posts. 14-3

The Treharris forwards were rewarded for all their effort with Paul “Pud” Lee finishing the forwards charge to cross the try line. Jack Morris converted. 14-10

Treharris finished the first half strongly with the best move of the game with Andrew Llewellyn doing what he does best and cut through the Cilfynydd defence to put Dale Evans away to regain the lead and make the half time score 14-15.

It was a nail biting second half with both sides trying to cross the try line and finish off the game. Both defences were put under pressure resulting in both sides conceding penalties. Both sides scored two penalties a piece resulting in the lead switching back and fore. It was Treharris who came away with the spoils for a well deserved and hard fought victory.

Final score: Cilfynydd RFC 20 Treharris Phoenix RFC 21
